Expanded service in 2006
We have much to be thankful for, in 2006 we expanded our service with the help of many volunteers both in the community and State of Montana but also with contributions from across the the country. Blackfeet Tribal Council has provided a new location for the food center in Browning and we we have our new center in Heart Butte.
Kid's Cafe in 2007
Currently we are working with America's Second Harvest, the Montana's Foodbank Net-Work and the Great Falls Community Food Bank to establish the Kid's Cafe program in four locations on the reservation. Two will be located in Boy's and Girls clubs, one at the Boxing Club and one at the Methodist Church.
Kid's Cafe's provide meals to school aged children after school and on weekends so that needy children don't need to miss meals. We wish we could provide meals to adults as well but this will be a good start.
The main objective is to assist those whom are in dire need of food items. Because of cutbacks in the food stamp program; cut-backs in General Assistance, G. A.; law firefighting season (a lot of fire-fighters did not get to go out...), expected lay-offs with the Blackfeet Tribal Programs/IBIackfeet Tribe; cut-backs on budgets within various departments both Tribal and State/Federal; there is an estimated eighty-five percent (85%) unemployment rate; Montana is the fourth lowest state of the nation out of fifty states (less revenue, less employment, less per-capita, etc.).
The Blackfeet Food Bank Center is an "All Volunteer Effort". It is a 'Non-Faith' and does not Discriminate to whom it serves.
